Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Invite him here with honour high,
Open passage
King Daśaratha's old ally.
Open passage
And Káśi's88 lord of gentle speech,
Open passage
Who finds a pleasant word for each,
Open passage
In length of days our monarch's peer,
Open passage
Illustrious king, invite him here.
Open passage
The father of our ruler's bride,
Open passage
Known for his virtues far and wide,
Open passage
The king whom Kekaya's89 realms obey,
Open passage
Him with his son invite, I pray.
Open passage
And Lomapád the Angas' king,
Open passage
True to his vows and godlike, bring.
Open passage
For be thine invitations sent
Open passage
To west and south and orient.
Open passage
Call those who rule Suráshṭra's90 land,
Open passage
Suvíra's91 realm and Sindhu's strand,
Open passage
And all the kings of earth beside
Open passage
In friendship's bonds with us allied:
Open passage
Invite them all to hasten in
Open passage
With retinue and kith and kin.”
Open passage
Vaśishṭha's speech without delay
Open passage
Sumantra bent him to obey.
Open passage
And sent his trusty envoys forth
Open passage
Eastward and westward, south and north.
Open passage
Obedient to the saint's request
Open passage
Himself he hurried forth, and pressed
Open passage
Each nobler chief and lord and king
Open passage
To hasten to the gathering.
Open passage
Before the saint Vaśishṭha stood
Open passage
All those who wrought with stone and wood,
Open passage
And showed the work which every one
Open passage
In furtherance of the rite had done,
Open passage
Rejoiced their ready zeal to see,
Open passage
Thus to the craftsmen all said he:
Open passage
“I charge ye, masters, see to this,
Open passage
That there be nothing done amiss,
Open passage
And this, I pray, in mind be borne,
Open passage
That not one gift ye give in scorn:
Open passage
Whenever scorn a gift attends
Open passage
Great sin is his who thus offends.”
