Canto XCIV. Chitrakúta.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
There long the son of Raghu dwelt
Open passage
And love for hill and wood he felt.
Open passage
Then his Videhan spouse to please
Open passage
And his own heart of woe to ease,
Open passage
Like some Immortal—Indra so
Open passage
Might Swarga's charms to Śachí show—
Open passage
Drew her sweet eyes to each delight
Open passage
Of Chitrakúṭa's lovely height:
Open passage
“Though reft of power and kingly sway,
Open passage
Though friends and home are far away,
Open passage
I cannot mourn my altered lot,
Open passage
Enamoured of this charming spot.
Open passage
Look, darling, on this noble hill
Open passage
Which sweet birds with their music fill,
Open passage
Bright with a thousand metal dyes
Open passage
His lofty summits cleave the skies.
Open passage
See, there a silvery sheen is spread,
Open passage
And there like blood the rocks are red.
Open passage
There shows a streak of emerald green,
Open passage
And pink and yellow glow between.
Open passage
There where the higher peaks ascend,
Open passage
Crystal and flowers and topaz blend,
Open passage
And others flash their light afar
Open passage
Like mercury or some fair star:
Open passage
With such a store of metals dyed
Open passage
The king of hills is glorified.
Open passage
There through the wild birds' populous home
Open passage
The harmless bear and tiger roam:
Open passage
Hyænas range the woody slopes
Open passage
With herds of deer and antelopes.
Open passage
See, love, the trees that clothe his side
Open passage
All lovely in their summer pride,
Open passage
In richest wealth of leaves arrayed,
Open passage
With flower and fruit and light and shade,
Open passage
Look where the young Rose-apple glows;
Open passage
What loaded boughs the Mango shows;
Open passage
See, waving in the western wind
Open passage
The light leaves of the Tamarind,
Open passage
And mark that giant Peepul through
Open passage
The feathery clump of tall bamboo.369
