Poems from the Divan of Hafiz

XI

Project Gutenberg EPUB edition Ḥāfiẓ, active 14th century and Bell, Gertrude Lowthian
Open passage
Mirth, Spring, to linger in a garden fair,
Open passage
What more has earth to give? All ye that wait,
Open passage
Where is the Cup-bearer, the flagon where?
Open passage
When pleasant hours slip from the hand of Fate,
Open passage
Reckon each hour as a certain gain;
Open passage
Who seeks to know the end of mortal care
Open passage
Shall question his experience in vain.
Open passage
Thy fettered life hangs on a single thread—
Open passage
Some comfort for thy present ills devise,
Open passage
But those that time may bring thou shalt not dread.
Open passage
Waters of Life and Irem’s Paradise—
Open passage
What meaning do our dreams and pomp convey,
Open passage
Save that beside a mighty stream, wide-fed,
Open passage
We sit and sing of wine and go our way!
Open passage
The modest and the merry shall be seen
Open passage
To boast their kinship with a single voice;
Open passage
There are no differences to choose between,
Open passage
Thou art but flattering thy soul with choice!
Open passage
Who knows the Curtain’s secret?... Heaven is mute!
Open passage
And yet with Him who holds the Curtain, e’en
Open passage
With Him, oh Braggart, thou would’st raise dispute!
Open passage
Although His thrall shall miss the road and err,
Open passage
’Tis but to teach him wisdom through distress,
Open passage
Else Pardon and Compassionate Mercy were
Open passage
But empty syllables and meaningless.
Open passage
The Zealot thirsts for draughts of Kausar’s wine,
Open passage
And Hafiz doth an earthly cup prefer—
Open passage
But what, between the two, is God’s design?
