Canto XXXV. Kaikeyí Reproached.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Wild with the rage he could not calm,
Open passage
Sumantra, grinding palm on palm,
Open passage
His head in quick impatience shook,
Open passage
And sighed with woe he could not brook.
Open passage
He gnashed his teeth, his eyes were red,
Open passage
From his changed face the colour fled.
Open passage
In rage and grief that knew no law,
Open passage
The temper of the king he saw.
Open passage
With his word-arrows swift and keen
Open passage
He shook the bosom of the queen.
Open passage
With scorn, as though its lightning stroke
Open passage
Would blast her body, thus he spoke:
Open passage
“Thou, who, of no dread sin afraid,
Open passage
Hast Daśaratha's self betrayed,
Open passage
Lord of the world, whose might sustains
Open passage
Each thing that moves or fixed remains,
Open passage
What direr crime is left thee now?
Open passage
Death to thy lord and house art thou,
Open passage
Whose cruel deeds the king distress,
Open passage
Mahendra's peer in mightiness,
Open passage
Firm as the mountain's rooted steep,
Open passage
Enduring as the Ocean's deep.
Open passage
Despise not Daśaratha, he
Open passage
Is a kind lord and friend to thee.
Open passage
A loving wife in worth outruns
Open passage
The mother of ten million sons.
Open passage
Kings, when their sires have passed away,
Open passage
Succeed by birthright to the sway.
Open passage
Ikshváku's son still rules the state,
Open passage
Yet thou this rule wouldst violate.
Open passage
Yea, let thy son, Kaikeyí, reign,
Open passage
Let Bharat rule his sire's domain.
Open passage
Thy will, O Queen, shall none oppose:
Open passage
We all will go where Ráma goes.
Open passage
No Bráhman, scorning thee, will rest
Open passage
Within the realm thou governest,
Open passage
But all will fly indignant hence:
Open passage
So great thy trespass and offence.
Open passage
I marvel, when thy crime I see,
Open passage
Earth yawns not quick to swallow thee;
