Open passage
Thus, as his love of Ráma taught,
Open passage
The faithful vulture strove and fought.
Open passage
But Rávaṇ seized his sword and smote
Open passage
His wings and side and feet and throat.
Open passage
At mangled side and wing he bled;
Open passage
He fell, and life was almost fled.
Open passage
The lady saw her champion lie,
Open passage
His plumes distained with gory dye,
Open passage
And hastened to the vulture's side
Open passage
Grieving as though a kinsman died.
Open passage
The lord of Lanká's island viewed
Open passage
Whose back like some dark cloud was hued,
Open passage
Like ashes, when by none renewed,
Open passage
The flame has died away.
Open passage
The lady saw with mournful eye,
Open passage
Her champion press the plain,—
Open passage
The royal bird, her true ally
Open passage
Whom Rávaṇ's might had slain.
Open passage
Her soft arms locked in strict embrace
Open passage
Around his neck she kept,
Open passage
And lovely with her moon-bright face
Open passage
Bent o'er her friend and wept.
