Parable of the Burning House.

Project Gutenberg EPUB edition Soothill, William Edward and Kumārajīva
Open passage
Some who become jackals,
Open passage
Their bodies scabbed with sores,
Open passage
Without even one whole eye,
Open passage
They are beaten and stoned,
Open passage
When they have thus died,
Open passage
Each receives a snake’s body,
Open passage
Deaf and stupid, without feet,
Open passage
They wriggle about on their bellies,
Open passage
By many kinds of insects
Open passage
Because of slandering this Sutra,
Open passage
Such is their punishment.
Open passage
Should they become human beings,
Open passage
Their natural powers are dull;
Open passage
Dwarfed, ugly, palsied, and lame,
Open passage
Blind, deaf, and humpbacked;
Open passage
They are demon-possessed,
Open passage
They are needy and menial,
Open passage
Ordered about by others.
Open passage
Often ill and emaciated,
Open passage
Having none on whom to rely;
Open passage
Even those on whom they depend
Open passage
If they should get anything,
Open passage
It is speedily forgotten;
Open passage
If they practise means of healing
Open passage
And follow the usual treatment,
Open passage
Other ailments will be added,
Open passage
Or, their patients will die;
