Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Perform the part for which we wait,
Open passage
And rites of marriage celebrate.”
Open passage
Skilled in the laws which Scriptures teach,
Open passage
He answered thus Vaśishṭha's speech:
Open passage
“O Saint, what warder bars the gate?
Open passage
Whose bidding can the king await?
Open passage
In one's own house what doubt is shown?
Open passage
This kingdom, Sage, is all thine own.
Open passage
E'en now the maidens may be found
Open passage
Within the sacrificial ground:
Open passage
Each vow is vowed and prayed each prayer,
Open passage
And they, like fire, are shining there.
Open passage
Here by the shrine my place I took
Open passage
Expecting thee with eager look,
Open passage
No bar the nuptial rites should stay:
Open passage
What cause have we for more delay?”
Open passage
When Janak's speech the monarch heard,
Open passage
To sons and saints he gave the word,
Open passage
And set them in the holy ring,
Open passage
Then to Vaśishṭha spoke the king
Open passage
Of Mithilá: “O mighty Sage,
Open passage
Now let this task thy care engage,
Open passage
And lend thine aid and counsel wise
Open passage
The nuptial rites to solemnize.”
Open passage
The saint Vaśishṭha gave assent,
Open passage
And quickly to the task he went,
Open passage
With Viśvámitra, nothing loth,
Open passage
And Śatánanda aiding both.
Open passage
Then, as the rules prescribe, they made
Open passage
An altar in the midst, and laid
Open passage
Fresh wreaths of fragrant flowers thereon.
Open passage
The golden ladles round it shone;
Open passage
And many a vase, which branches hid
Open passage
Fixed in the perforated lid,
Open passage
And sprays, and cups, and censers there
Open passage
Stood filled with incense rich and rare;
Open passage
Shell-bowls, and spoons, and salvers dressed
Open passage
With gifts that greet the honoured guest;
Open passage
Piles of parched rice some dishes bore,
Open passage
Others with corn prepared ran o'er;
