When Vishṇu thus had gone on earth,
Open passage
From the great king to take his birth,
Open passage
The self-existent Lord of all
Open passage
Addressed the Gods who heard his call:
Open passage
“For Vishṇu's sake, the strong and true,
Open passage
Who seeks the good of all of you,
Open passage
Make helps, in war to lend him aid,
Open passage
In forms that change at will, arrayed,
Open passage
Of wizard skill and hero might,
Open passage
Outstrippers of the wind in flight,
Open passage
Skilled in the arts of counsel, wise,
Open passage
And Vishṇu's peers in bold emprise;
Open passage
With heavenly arts and prudence fraught,
Open passage
By no devices to be caught;
Open passage
Skilled in all weapon's lore and use
Open passage
As they who drink the immortal juice.111
Open passage
And let the nymphs supreme in grace,
Open passage
And maidens of the minstrel race,
Open passage
Monkeys and snakes, and those who rove
Open passage
Free spirits of the hill and grove,
Open passage
And wandering Daughters of the Air,
Open passage
In monkey form brave children bear.
Open passage
So erst the lord of bears I shaped,
Open passage
Born from my mouth as wide I gaped.”
Open passage
Thus by the mighty Sire addressed
Open passage
They all obeyed his high behest,
Open passage
And thus begot in countless swarms
Open passage
Brave sons disguised in sylvan forms.
Open passage
Each God, each sage became a sire,
Open passage
Each minstrel of the heavenly quire,112
Open passage
Each faun,113 of children strong and good
Open passage
Whose feet should roam the hill and wood.
Open passage
Snakes, bards,114 and spirits,115 serpents bold
Open passage
Had sons too numerous to be told.
Open passage
Báli, the woodland hosts who led,
Open passage
High as Mahendra's116 lofty head,
Open passage
Was Indra's child. That noblest fire,
Open passage
The Sun, was great Sugríva's sire,
Open passage
Tára, the mighty monkey, he
Open passage
Was offspring of Vṛihaspati:117
