Canto LXXII. The Gift Of Kine.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
When royal Janak's words were done,
Open passage
Joined with Vaśishṭha Kuśik's son,
Open passage
The mighty sage began his speech:
Open passage
“No mind may soar, no thought can reach
Open passage
The glories of Ikshváku's line,
Open passage
Or, great Videha's King, of thine:
Open passage
None in the whole wide world may vie
Open passage
With them in fame and honours high.
Open passage
Well matched, I ween, in holy bands,
Open passage
These peerless pairs will join their hands.
Open passage
But hear me as I speak once more;
Open passage
Thy brother, skilled in duty's lore,
Open passage
Has at his home a royal pair
Open passage
Of daughters most divinely fair.
Open passage
I for the hands of these sweet two
Open passage
For Bharat and Śatrughna sue,
Open passage
Both princes of heroic mould,
Open passage
Wise, fair of form, and lofty-souled.
Open passage
All Daśaratha's sons, I ween,
Open passage
Own each young grace of form and mien:
Open passage
Brave as the Gods are they, nor yield
Open passage
To the great Lords the worlds who shield.
Open passage
By these, good Prince of merits high,
Open passage
Ikshváku's house with thine ally.”
Open passage
The suit the holy sage preferred,
Open passage
With willing ear the monarch heard:
Open passage
Vaśishṭha's lips the counsel praised:
Open passage
Then spake the king with hands upraised:
Open passage
“Now blest indeed my race I deem,
Open passage
Which your high will, O Saints supreme,
Open passage
With Daśaratha's house unites
Open passage
In bonds of love and marriage rites.
Open passage
So be it done. My nieces twain
Open passage
Let Bharat and Śatrughna gain,
Open passage
And the four youths the selfsame day
Open passage
Four maiden hands in theirs shall lay.
Open passage
No day so lucky may compare,
Open passage
For marriage—so the wise declare—
Open passage
With the last day of Phálguni
Open passage
Ruled by the genial deity.”
