Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Śatrughna saw him lying low
Open passage
O'erwhelmed beneath the crush of woe,
Open passage
And as upon the king he thought,
Open passage
He fell upon the earth distraught.
Open passage
When to his loving memory came
Open passage
Those noble gifts, that kingly frame,
Open passage
He sorrowed, by his woe distressed,
Open passage
As one by frenzied rage possessed:
Open passage
“Ah me, this surging sea of woe
Open passage
Has drowned us with its overflow:
Open passage
The source is Manthará, dire and dark,
Open passage
Kaikeyí is the ravening shark:
Open passage
And the great boons the monarch gave
Open passage
Lend conquering might to every wave.
Open passage
Ah, whither wilt thou go, and leave
Open passage
Thy Bharat in his woe to grieve,
Open passage
Whom ever 'twas thy greatest joy
Open passage
To fondle as a tender boy?
Open passage
Didst thou not give with thoughtful care
Open passage
Our food, our drink, our robes to wear?
Open passage
Whose love will now for us provide,
Open passage
When thou, our king and sire, hast died?
Open passage
At such a time bereft, forlorn,
Open passage
Why is not earth in sunder torn,
Open passage
Missing her monarch's firm control,
Open passage
His love of right, his lofty soul?
Open passage
Ah me, for Ráma roams afar,
Open passage
My sire is where the Blessed are;
Open passage
How can I live deserted? I
Open passage
Will pass into the fire and die.
Open passage
Abandoned thus, I will not brook
Open passage
Upon Ayodhyá's town to look,
Open passage
Once guarded by Ikshváku's race:
Open passage
The wood shall be my dwelling place.”
Open passage
Then when the princes' mournful train
Open passage
Heard the sad brothers thus complain,
Open passage
And saw their misery, at the view
Open passage
Their grief burst wilder out anew.
Open passage
Faint with lamenting, sad and worn,
Open passage
Each like a bull with broken horn,
