Canto XIV. Rávan Doomed.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
The saint, well read in holy lore,
Open passage
Pondered awhile his answer o'er,
Open passage
And thus again addressed the king,
Open passage
His wandering thoughts regathering:
Open passage
“Another rite will I begin
Open passage
Which shall the sons thou cravest win,
Open passage
Where all things shall be duly sped
Open passage
And first Atharva texts be read.”
Open passage
Then by Vibháṇdak's gentle son
Open passage
Was that high sacrifice begun,
Open passage
The king's advantage seeking still
Open passage
And zealous to perform his will.
Open passage
Now all the Gods had gathered there,
Open passage
Each one for his allotted share:
Open passage
Brahmá, the ruler of the sky,
Open passage
Stháṇu, Náráyaṇ, Lord most high,
Open passage
And holy Indra men might view
Open passage
With Maruts105 for his retinue;
Open passage
The heavenly chorister, and saint,
Open passage
And spirit pure from earthly taint,
Open passage
With one accord had sought the place
Open passage
The high-souled monarch's rite to grace.
Open passage
Then to the Gods who came to take
Open passage
Their proper share the hermit spake:
Open passage
“For you has Daśaratha slain
Open passage
The votive steed, a son to gain;
Open passage
Stern penance-rites the king has tried,
Open passage
And in firm faith on you relied,
Open passage
And now with undiminished care
Open passage
A second rite would fain prepare.
Open passage
But, O ye Gods, consent to grant
Open passage
The longing of your supplicant.
Open passage
For him beseeching hands I lift,
Open passage
And pray you all to grant the gift,
Open passage
That four fair sons of high renown
Open passage
The offerings of the king may crown.”
Open passage
They to the hermit's son replied:
Open passage
“His longing shall be gratified.
Open passage
For, Bráhman, in most high degree
Open passage
We love the king and honour thee.”
