Open passage
This hand in sign of friendship take,
Open passage
And bind the bond we ne'er will break.”
Open passage
He spoke, and joy thrilled Ráma's breast;
Open passage
Sugríva's hand he seized and pressed
Open passage
And, transport beaming from his eye,
Open passage
Held to his heart his new ally.
Open passage
In wanderer's weed disguised no more,
Open passage
His proper form Hanúmán wore.
Open passage
Then, wood with wood engendering,554 came
Open passage
Neath his deft hands the kindled flame.
Open passage
Between the chiefs that fire he placed
Open passage
With wreaths of flowers and worship graced.
Open passage
And round its blazing glory went
Open passage
The friends with slow steps reverent.
Open passage
Thus each to other pledged and bound
Open passage
In solemn league new transport found,
Open passage
And bent upon his dear ally
Open passage
The gaze he ne'er could satisfy.
Open passage
“Friend of my soul art thou: we share
Open passage
Each other's joy, each other's care;”
Open passage
Thus in the bliss that thrilled his breast
Open passage
Sugríva Raghu's son addressed.
Open passage
From a high Sál a branch he tore
Open passage
Which many a leaf and blossom bore,
Open passage
And the fine twigs beneath them laid
Open passage
A seat for him and Ráma made.
Open passage
Then Hanumán with joyous mind,
Open passage
Son of the God who rules the wind,
Open passage
To Lakshmaṇ gave, his seat to be,
Open passage
The gay branch of a Sandal tree.
Open passage
Then King Sugríva with his eyes
Open passage
Still trembling with the sweet surprise
Open passage
Of the great joy he could not hide,
Open passage
To Raghu's noblest scion cried:
Open passage
“O Ráma, racked with woe and fear,
Open passage
Spurned by my foes, I wander here.
Open passage
Reft of my spouse, forlorn I dwell
Open passage
Here in my forest citadel.
Open passage
Or wild with terror and distress
Open passage
Roam through the distant wilderness.
