Canto CIX. The Battle.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
With wondrous power and might and skill
Open passage
The giant fought with Ráma still.
Open passage
Each at his foe his chariot drove,
Open passage
And still for death or victory strove.
Open passage
The warriors' steeds together dashed,
Open passage
And pole with pole reëchoing clashed.
Open passage
Then Ráma launching dart on dart
Open passage
Made Rávaṇ's coursers swerve and start.
Open passage
Nor was the lord of Lanká slow
Open passage
To rain his arrows on the foe,
Open passage
Who showed, by fiery points assailed,
Open passage
No trace of pain, nor shook nor quailed.
Open passage
Dense clouds of arrows Ráma shot
Open passage
With that strong arm which rested not,
Open passage
And spear and mace and club and brand
Open passage
Fell in dire rain from Rávaṇ's hand.
Open passage
The storm of missiles fiercely cast
Open passage
Stirred up the oceans with its blast,
Open passage
And Serpent-Gods and fiends who dwell
Open passage
Below were troubled by the swell.
Open passage
The earth with hill and plain and brook
Open passage
And grove and garden reeled and shook:
Open passage
The very sun grew cold and pale,
Open passage
And horror stilled the rising gale.
Open passage
God and Gandharva, sage and saint
Open passage
Cried out, with grief and terror faint:
Open passage
“O may the prince of Raghu's line
Open passage
Give peace to Bráhmans and to kine,
Open passage
And, rescuing the worlds, o'erthrow
Open passage
The giant king our awful foe.”
Open passage
Then to his deadly string the pride
Open passage
Of Raghu's race a shaft applied.
Open passage
Sharp as a serpent's venomed fang
Open passage
Straight to its mark the arrow sprang,
Open passage
And from the giant's body shred
Open passage
With trenchant steel the monstrous head.
Open passage
There might the triple world behold
Open passage
That severed head adorned with gold.
Open passage
But when all eyes were bent to view,
Open passage
Swift in its stead another grew.
