Canto XIX. Tárá's Grief.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
No answer gave the Vánar king
Open passage
To Ráma's prudent counselling.
Open passage
Battered and bruised by tree and stone,
Open passage
By Ráma's arrow overthrown,
Open passage
Fainting upon the ground he lay,
Open passage
Gasping his troubled life away.
Open passage
But Tárá in the Vánar's hall
Open passage
Heard tidings of her husband's fall;
Open passage
Heard that a shaft from Ráma's bow
Open passage
Had laid the royal Báli low.
Open passage
Her darling Angad by her side,
Open passage
Distracted from her home she hied.
Open passage
Then nigh the place of battle drew
Open passage
The Vánars, Angad's retinue.
Open passage
They saw the bow-armed Ráma: dread
Open passage
Fell on them, and they turned and fled.
Open passage
Like helpless deer, their leaders slain,
Open passage
So wildly fled the startled train.
Open passage
But Tárá saw, and nearer pressed,
Open passage
And thus the flying band addressed:
Open passage
“O Vánars, ye who ever stand
Open passage
About our king, a trusty band,
Open passage
Where is the lion master? why
Open passage
Forsake ye thus your lord and fly?
Open passage
Say, lies he dead upon the plain,
Open passage
A brother by a brother slain,
Open passage
Or pierced by shafts from Ráma's bow
Open passage
That rain from far upon the foe?”
Open passage
Thus Tárá questioned, and was still:
Open passage
Then, wearers of each shape at will,
Open passage
The Vánars thus with one accord
Open passage
Answered the Lady of their lord:
Open passage
“Turn, Tárá turn, and half undone
Open passage
Save Angad thy beloved son.
Open passage
There Ráma stands in death's disguise,
Open passage
And conquered Báli faints and dies.
Open passage
He by whose strong arm, thick and fast,
Open passage
Uprooted trees and rocks were cast,
Open passage
Lies smitten by a shaft that came
Open passage
Resistless as the lightning flame.
