Canto XXXVIII. Care For Kausalyá

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Then when the people wroth and sad
Open passage
Saw Sítá in bark vesture clad,
Open passage
Though wedded, like some widowed thing,
Open passage
They cried out, “Shame upon thee, King!”
Open passage
Grieved by their cry and angry look
Open passage
The lord of earth at once forsook
Open passage
All hope in life that still remained,
Open passage
In duty, self, and fame unstained.
Open passage
Ikshváku's son with burning sighs
Open passage
On Queen Kaikeyí bent his eyes,
Open passage
And said: “But Sítá must not flee
Open passage
In garments of a devotee.
Open passage
My holy guide has spoken truth:
Open passage
Unfit is she in tender youth,
Open passage
So gently nurtured, soft and fair,
Open passage
The hardships of the wood to share.
Open passage
How has she sinned, devout and true,
Open passage
The noblest monarch's child,
Open passage
That she should garb of bark indue
Open passage
And journey to the wild?
Open passage
That she should spend her youthful days
Open passage
Like some poor mendicant who strays
Open passage
Sore troubled, through the land?
Open passage
Ah, let the child of Janak throw
Open passage
Her dress of bark aside,
Open passage
And let the royal lady go
Open passage
With royal wealth supplied.
Open passage
Not such the pledge I gave before,
Open passage
The oath, which I the sinner swore
Open passage
Is kept, and leaves her clear.
Open passage
Won from her childlike love this too
Open passage
My instant death would be,
Open passage
As blossoms on the old bamboo
Open passage
Destroy the parent tree.313
Open passage
If aught amiss by Ráma done
Open passage
Offend thee, O thou wicked one,
Open passage
What least transgression canst thou find
Open passage
In her, thou worst of womankind?
