Open passage
Then Ráma cried: “I little heed
Open passage
Gigantic strength or doughty deed.
Open passage
In spite of all their might has done
Open passage
The king, the captain, and the son
Open passage
Shall fall beneath my fury dead,
Open passage
And thou shalt reign in Rávaṇ's stead.
Open passage
He, though in depths of earth he dwell,
Open passage
Or seek protection down in hell,
Open passage
Or kneel before the Sire supreme,
Open passage
His forfeit life shall ne'er redeem.
Open passage
Yea, by my brothers' lives I swear,
Open passage
I will not to my home repair
Open passage
Till Rávaṇ and his kith and kin
Open passage
Have paid in death the price of sin.”
Open passage
Vibhishaṇ bowed his head and cried:
Open passage
“Thy conquering army will I guide
Open passage
To storm the city of the foe,
Open passage
And aid the tyrant's overthrow.”
Open passage
Thus spake Vibhishaṇ: Ráma pressed
Open passage
The Rákshas chieftain to his breast,
Open passage
And cried to Lakshmaṇ: “Haste and bring
Open passage
Sea-water for the new-made king.”
Open passage
He spoke, and o'er Vibhishaṇ's head
Open passage
The consecrating drops were shed
Open passage
Mid shouts that hailed with one accord
Open passage
The giants' king and Lanká's lord.
Open passage
“Is there no way,” Hanúmán cried,
Open passage
“No passage o'er the boisterous tide?
Open passage
How may we lead the Vánar host
Open passage
In triumph to the farther coast?”
Open passage
“Thus,” said Vibhishaṇ, “I advise:
Open passage
Let Raghu's son in suppliant guise
Open passage
Entreat the mighty Sea to lend
Open passage
His succour and this cause befriend.
Open passage
His channels, as the wise have told,
Open passage
By Sagar's sons were dug of old,932
Open passage
Nor will high-thoughted Ocean scorn
Open passage
A prince of Sagar's lineage born.”
Open passage
He ceased; the prudent counsel won
Open passage
The glad assent of Raghu's son.
