Canto XXIII. Tárá's Lament.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
She kissed her lifeless husband's face,
Open passage
She clasped him in a close embrace,
Open passage
Laid her soft lips upon his head;
Open passage
Then words like these the mourner said:
Open passage
“No words of mine wouldst thou regard,
Open passage
And now thy bed is cold and hard.
Open passage
Upon the rude rough ground o'erthrown,
Open passage
Beneath thee naught but sand and stone.
Open passage
To thee the earth is dearer far
Open passage
Than I and my caresses are,
Open passage
If thou upon her breast wilt lie,
Open passage
And to my words make no reply.
Open passage
Ah my beloved, good and brave,
Open passage
Bold to attack and strong to save,
Open passage
Fate is Sugríva's thrall, and we
Open passage
In him our lord and master see.
Open passage
Lo, by thy bed, a mournful band,
Open passage
Thy Vánar chiefs lamenting stand.
Open passage
O hear thy nobles' groans and cries,
Open passage
O mark thy Angad's weeping eyes,
Open passage
O list to my entreaties, break
Open passage
The chains of slumber and awake.
Open passage
Ah me, my lord, this lowly bed
Open passage
Where rest thy limbs and fallen head,
Open passage
Is the cold couch where smitten lay
Open passage
Thy foemen in the bloody fray.
Open passage
O noble heart from blemish free,
Open passage
Lover of war, beloved by me.
Open passage
Why hast thou fled away and left
Open passage
Thy Tárá of all hope bereft?
Open passage
Unwise the father who allows
Open passage
His child to be a warrior's spouse,
Open passage
For, hero, see thy consort's fate,
Open passage
A widow now most desolate,
Open passage
For ever broken is my pride,
Open passage
My hope of lasting bliss has died,
Open passage
And sinking in the lowest deep
Open passage
Of sorrow's sea I pine and weep.
Open passage
Ah, surely not of earthly mould,
Open passage
This stony heart is stern and cold,
