Canto XLV. Indrajít's Victory.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Brave Ráma, burning still to know
Open passage
The station of his artful foe,
Open passage
Gave to ten chieftains, mid the best
Open passage
Of all the host, his high behest.
Open passage
Swift rose in air the Vánar band:
Open passage
Each region of the sky they scanned:
Open passage
But Rávaṇ's son by magic skill
Open passage
Checked them with arrows swifter still,
Open passage
When streams of blood from chest and side
Open passage
The dauntless Vánars' limbs had dyed,
Open passage
The giant in his misty shroud
Open passage
Showed like the sun obscured by cloud.
Open passage
Like serpents hissing through the air,
Open passage
His arrows smote the princely pair;
Open passage
And from their limbs at every rent
Open passage
A stream of rushing blood was sent.
Open passage
Like Kinśuk trees they stood, that show
Open passage
In spring their blossoms' crimson glow.
Open passage
Then Indrajít with fury eyed
Open passage
Ikshváku's royal sons, and cried:
Open passage
“Not mighty Indra can assail
Open passage
Or see me when I choose to veil
Open passage
My form in battle: and can ye,
Open passage
Children of earth, contend with me?
Open passage
The arrowy noose this hand has shot
Open passage
Has bound you with a hopeless knot;
Open passage
And, slaughtered by my shafts and bow,
Open passage
To Yáma's hall this hour ye go.”
Open passage
He spoke, and shouted. Then anew
Open passage
The arrows from his bowstring flew,
Open passage
And pierced, well aimed with perfect art,
Open passage
Each limb and joint and vital part.
Open passage
Transfixed with shafts in every limb,
Open passage
Their strength relaxed, their eyes grew dim.
Open passage
As two tall standards side by side,
Open passage
With each sustaining rope untied,
Open passage
Fall levelled by the howling blast,
Open passage
So earth's majestic lords at last
Open passage
Beneath the arrowy tempest reeled,
Open passage
And prostrate pressed the battle field.
