The Rámáyan of Válmíki, translated into English verse

Canto XXVIII. The Rains.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
“See, brother, see” thus Ráma cried
Open passage
On Mályavat's618 dark-wooded side,
Open passage
“A chain of clouds, like lofty hills,
Open passage
The sky with gathering shadow fills.
Open passage
Nine months those clouds have borne the load
Open passage
Conceived from sunbeams as they glowed,
Open passage
And, having drunk the seas, give birth,
Open passage
And drop their offspring on the earth.
Open passage
Easy it seems at such a time
Open passage
That flight of cloudy stairs to climb,
Open passage
And, from their summit, safely won,
Open passage
Hang flowery wreaths about the sun.
Open passage
See how the flash of evening's red
Open passage
Fringes the fleecy clouds o'erhead
Open passage
Till all the sky is streaked and lined
Open passage
With bleeding wounds incarnadined,
Open passage
Or the wide firmament above
Open passage
Shows like a lover sick with love
Open passage
And, pale with cloudlets, heaves a sigh
Open passage
In the soft breeze that wanders by.
Open passage
See, by the fervent heat embrowned,
Open passage
How drenched with recent showers, the ground
Open passage
Pours out in floods her gushing tears,
Open passage
Like Sítá wild with torturing fears.
Open passage
So softly blows this cloud-born breeze
Open passage
Cool through the boughs of camphor trees
Open passage
That one might hold it in the cup
Open passage
Of hollowed hands and drink it up.
Open passage
See, brother, where that rocky steep,
Open passage
Where odorous shrubs in rain-drops weep,
Open passage
Shows like Sugríva when they shed
Open passage
Tne royal balm upon his head.
Open passage
Like students at their task appear
Open passage
These hills whose misty peaks are near:
Open passage
Black deerskin619 garments wrought of cloud
Open passage
Their forms with fitting mantles shroud,
Open passage
Each torrent from the summit poured
Open passage
Supplies the place of sacred cord.620
Open passage
And winds that in their caverns moan
Open passage
Sound like the voice's undertone.621
