Matelda and the cloister of Hellfde : $b extracts from...

How God draweth the Soul to Himself.

Project Gutenberg EPUB edition Mechthild, of Magdeburg and Bevan, Frances
Open passage
Eagle of the highest Heaven, gentle Lamb, Infolding Fire,
Open passage
Barren, thirsty, do I seek Thee,
Open passage
Through the ages of desire,
Open passage
One day as a thousand winters,
Open passage
Waiting, Lord, for Thee.
Open passage
Bitterer to the soul that loveth
Open passage
Far from her Beloved to dwell,
Open passage
Than the pit of doom to sinners—
Open passage
An abyss there is profounder
Open passage
Than the depths of hell.
Open passage
The nightingale she can but sing,
Open passage
For she is made of love’s delight,
Open passage
Of love bereft, what else were left
Open passage
Then spake the spirit to the soul—
Open passage
“Arise, O Queen, and sing!
Open passage
Behold, He comes, the Beloved One,
Open passage
Behold the Bridegroom King!”
Open passage
Then spake the soul in joyful fear—
Open passage
“O blessed Herald, so might it be!
Open passage
For I am faithless, guilty, vile,
Open passage
In Him alone is there rest for me.
Open passage
For me is no home beneath the skies,
Open passage
No summer land, and no resting-place,
Open passage
But the marvellous pity of His eyes,
Open passage
And the sweetness of His Face;
Open passage
And when all around the lights are dim,
Open passage
The heart that sorroweth turns to Him.”
Open passage
“Thou must watch and wait,
Open passage
And water the earth, and strew the flowers.”
Open passage
But the soul made answer—
Open passage
Must watch in prayer, and must wait in shame,
Open passage
In tears must water, and long for the day;
Open passage
But if as I strew the flowers He came,
Open passage
From myself and my tears I should pass away.
