Canto VIII. Prahasta's Speech.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Dark as a cloud of autumn, dread
Open passage
Prahasta joined his palms and said:
Open passage
“Gandharvas, Gods, the hosts who dwell
Open passage
In heaven, in air, in earth, in hell,
Open passage
Have yielded to thy might, and how
Open passage
Shall two weak men oppose thee now?
Open passage
Hanúmán came, a foe disguised,
Open passage
And mocked us heedless and surprised,
Open passage
Or never had he lived to flee
Open passage
And boast that he has fought with me.
Open passage
Command, O King, and this right hand
Open passage
Shall sweep the Vánars from the land,
Open passage
And hill and dale, to Ocean's shore,
Open passage
Shall know the death-doomed race no more.
Open passage
But let my care the means devise
Open passage
To guard thy city from surprise.”
Open passage
Then Durmukh cried, of Rákshas race:
Open passage
“Too long we brook the dire disgrace.
Open passage
He gave our city to the flames,
Open passage
He trod the chambers of thy dames.
Open passage
Ne'er shall so weak and vile a thing
Open passage
Unpunished brave the giants' king.
Open passage
Now shall this single arm attack
Open passage
And drive the daring Vánars back,
Open passage
Till to the winds of heaven they flee,
Open passage
Or seek the depths of earth and sea.”
Open passage
Then, brandishing the mace he bore,
Open passage
Whose horrid spikes were stained with gore,
Open passage
While fury made his eyeballs red,
Open passage
Impetuous Vajradanshṭra said:
Open passage
“Why waste a thought on one so vile
Open passage
As Hanúmán the Vánar, while
Open passage
Sugríva, Lakshmaṇ, yet remain,
Open passage
And Ráma mightier still, unslain?
Open passage
This mace to-day shall crush the three,
Open passage
And all the host will turn and flee.
Open passage
Listen, and I will speak: incline,
Open passage
O King, to hear these words of mine,
Open passage
For the deep plan that I propose
Open passage
Will swiftly rid thee of thy foes.
