Canto LV. Fear For Sítá.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
But other thoughts resumed their sway
Open passage
When Lanká's town in ruin lay;
Open passage
And, as his bosom felt their weight
Open passage
He stood a while to meditate.
Open passage
“What have I done?”, he thought with shame,
Open passage
“Destroyed the town with hostile flame.
Open passage
O happy they whose firm control
Open passage
Checks the wild passion of the soul;
Open passage
Who on the fires of anger throw
Open passage
The cooling drops that check their glow.
Open passage
But woe is me, whom wrath could lead
Open passage
To do this senseless shameless deed.
Open passage
The town to fire and death I gave,
Open passage
Nor thought of her I came to save,—
Open passage
Doomed by my own rash folly, doomed
Open passage
To perish in the flames consumed.
Open passage
If I, when anger drove me wild,
Open passage
Have caused the death of Janak's child,
Open passage
The kindled flame shall end my woe,
Open passage
Or the deep fires that burn below,886
Open passage
Or my forsaken corse shall be
Open passage
Food for the monsters of the sea.
Open passage
How can I meet Sugríva? how
Open passage
Before the royal brothers bow,—
Open passage
I whose rash deed has madly foiled,
Open passage
The noble work in which we toiled?
Open passage
Or has her own bright virtue shed
Open passage
Its guardian influence round her head?
Open passage
She lives untouched,—the peerless dame;
Open passage
Flame has no fury for the flame.887
Open passage
The very fire would ne'er consent
Open passage
To harm a queen so excellent,—
Open passage
The high-souled Ráma's faithful wife,
Open passage
Protected by her holy life.
Open passage
She lives, she lives. Why should I fear
Open passage
For one whom Raghu's sons hold dear?
Open passage
Has not the pitying fire that spared
Open passage
The Vánar for the lady cared?”
Open passage
Such were his thoughts: he pondered long,
Open passage
And fear grew faint and hope grew strong.
