The Rámáyan of Válmíki, translated into English verse

Canto CXIII. Mandodarí's Lament.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Now will the days of Sítá glide
Open passage
In tranquil joy by Ráma's side:
Open passage
And I—ah me, around me raves
Open passage
A sea of woe with whelming waves.
Open passage
With thee in days of old I trod
Open passage
Each spot beloved by nymph and God;
Open passage
I stood with thee in proud delight
Open passage
On Mandar's side and Meru's height;
Open passage
With thee, my lord, enchanted strayed
Open passage
In Chaitraratha's1013 lovely shade,
Open passage
And viewed each fairest scene afar
Open passage
Transported in thy radiant car.
Open passage
But source of every joy wast thou,
Open passage
And all my bliss is ended now.”
Open passage
Then Ráma to Vibhishaṇ cried:
Open passage
“Whate'er the ritual bids, provide.
Open passage
Obsequial honours duly pay,
Open passage
And these sad mourners' grief allay.”
Open passage
Vibhishaṇ answered, wise and true,
Open passage
For duty's changeless law he knew:
Open passage
“Nay one who scorned all sacred vows
Open passage
And dared to touch another's spouse,
Open passage
Fell tyrant of the human race,
Open passage
With funeral rites I may not grace.”
Open passage
Him Raghu's royal son, the best
Open passage
Of those who love the law, addressed:
Open passage
“False was the rover of the night,
Open passage
He loved the wrong and scorned the right.
Open passage
Yet for the fallen warrior plead
Open passage
The dauntless heart, the valorous deed.
Open passage
Let him who ne'er had brooked defeat,
Open passage
The chief whom Indra feared to meet,
Open passage
The ever-conquering lord, obtain
Open passage
The honours that should grace the slain.”
Open passage
Vibhishaṇ bade his friends prepare
Open passage
The funeral rites with thoughtful care.
Open passage
Himself the royal palace sought
Open passage
Whence sacred fire was quickly brought,
Open passage
With sandal wood and precious scents
Open passage
And pearl and coral ornaments.
