Canto VIII. Sumantra's Speech.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
No rain for many a year shall fall
Open passage
And grievous drought shall ruin all.
Open passage
The troubled king with many a prayer
Open passage
Shall bid the priests some cure declare:
Open passage
“The lore of Heaven 'tis yours to know,
Open passage
Nor are ye blind to things below:
Open passage
Declare, O holy men, the way
Open passage
This plague to expiate and stay.”
Open passage
Those best of Bráhmans shall reply:
Open passage
“By every art, O Monarch, try
Open passage
Hither to bring Vibháṇdak's child,
Open passage
Persuaded, captured, or beguiled.
Open passage
And when the boy is hither led
Open passage
To him thy daughter duly wed.”
Open passage
But how to bring that wondrous boy
Open passage
His troubled thoughts will long employ,
Open passage
And hopeless to achieve the task
Open passage
He counsel of his lords will ask,
Open passage
And bid his priests and servants bring
Open passage
With honour saintly Rishyaśring.
Open passage
But when they hear the monarch's speech,
Open passage
All these their master will beseech,
Open passage
With trembling hearts and looks of woe,
Open passage
To spare them, for they fear to go.
Open passage
And many a plan will they declare
Open passage
And crafty plots will frame,
Open passage
And promise fair to show him there,
Open passage
Unforced, with none to blame.
Open passage
On every word his lords shall say,
Open passage
And on the third returning day
Open passage
Then this shall be the plan agreed,
Open passage
That damsels shall be sent
Open passage
Attired in holy hermits' weed,
Open passage
And skilled in blandishment,
Open passage
That they the hermit may beguile
Open passage
With every art and amorous wile
Open passage
Whose use they know so well,
Open passage
And by their witcheries seduce
