Canto LXII. Ambarísha's Sacrifice.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
For holy works you all have wrought,
Open passage
True to the virtuous life I taught.
Open passage
Go, and as victims doomed to bleed,
Open passage
Die, and Lord Agni's hunger feed.
Open passage
So shall the rite completed end,
Open passage
This orphan gain a saving friend,
Open passage
Due offerings to the Gods be paid,
Open passage
And your own father's voice obeyed.”
Open passage
Then Madhushyand and all the rest
Open passage
Answered their sire with scorn and jest:
Open passage
“What! aid to others' sons afford,
Open passage
And leave thine own to die, my lord!
Open passage
To us it seems a horrid deed,
Open passage
As 'twere on one's own flesh to feed.”
Open passage
The hermit heard his sons' reply,
Open passage
And burning rage inflamed his eye.
Open passage
Then forth his words of fury burst:
Open passage
“Audacious speech, by virtue cursed!
Open passage
It lifts on end each shuddering hair—
Open passage
My charge to scorn! my wrath to dare!
Open passage
You, like Vaśishṭha's evil brood,
Open passage
Shall make the flesh of dogs your food
Open passage
A thousand years in many a birth,
Open passage
And punished thus shall dwell on earth.”
Open passage
Thus on his sons his curse he laid.
Open passage
Then calmed again that youth dismayed,
Open passage
And blessed him with his saving aid:
Open passage
“When in the sacred fetters bound,
Open passage
And with a purple garland crowned,
Open passage
At Vishṇu's post thou standest tied,
Open passage
With lauds be Agni glorified.
Open passage
And these two hymns of holy praise
Open passage
Forget not, Hermit's son, to raise
Open passage
In the king's rite, and thou shalt be
Open passage
Lord of thy wish, preserved, and free.”
Open passage
He learnt the hymns with mind intent,
Open passage
And from the hermit's presence went.
Open passage
To Ambarísha thus he spake:
Open passage
“Let us our onward journey take.
Open passage
Haste to thy home, O King, nor stay
