Canto XXIX. Khara's Defeat.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Firm as an earth upholding hill
Open passage
Whose summit veins of metal fill?
Open passage
Lo, here I stand before thy face
Open passage
To slay thee with my murderous mace,
Open passage
As Death, the universal lord,
Open passage
Stands threatening with his fatal cord.
Open passage
Enough of this. Much more remains
Open passage
That should be said: but time constrains.
Open passage
Ere to his rest the sun descend,
Open passage
And shades of night the combat end,
Open passage
The twice seven thousand of my band
Open passage
Who fell beneath thy bloody hand
Open passage
Shall have their tears all wiped away
Open passage
And triumph in thy fall to-day.”
Open passage
He spoke, and loosing from his hold
Open passage
His mighty mace ringed round with gold,
Open passage
Like some red bolt alive with fire
Open passage
Hurled it at Ráma, mad with ire.
Open passage
The ponderous mace which Khara threw
Open passage
Sent fiery flashes as it flew.
Open passage
Trees, shrubs were scorched beneath the blast,
Open passage
As onward to its aim it passed.
Open passage
But Ráma, watching as it sped
Open passage
Dire as His noose who rules the dead,
Open passage
Cleft it with arrows as it came
Open passage
On rushing with a hiss and flame.
Open passage
Its fury spent and burnt away,
Open passage
Harmless upon the ground it lay
Open passage
Like a great snake in furious mood
Open passage
By herbs of numbing power subdued.
