Canto I. Nárad.7

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Soon from their bonds his limbs were free,
Open passage
But honouring the high decree
Open passage
Which Brahmá37 had pronounced of yore,
Open passage
He calmly all their insults bore.
Open passage
The town he burnt with hostile flame,
Open passage
And spoke again with Ráma's dame,
Open passage
Then swiftly back to Ráma flew
Open passage
With tidings of the interview.
Open passage
Then with Sugríva for his guide,
Open passage
Came Ráma to the ocean side.
Open passage
He smote the sea with shafts as bright
Open passage
As sunbeams in their summer height,
Open passage
And quick appeared the Rivers' King38
Open passage
Obedient to the summoning.
Open passage
A bridge was thrown by Nala o'er
Open passage
The narrow sea from shore to shore.39
Open passage
They crossed to Lanká's golden town,
Open passage
Where Ráma's hand smote Rávaṇ down.
Open passage
Vibhishaṇ there was left to reign
Open passage
Over his brother's wide domain.
Open passage
To meet her husband Sítá came;
Open passage
But Ráma, stung with ire and shame,
Open passage
With bitter words his wife addressed
Open passage
Before the crowd that round her pressed.
Open passage
But Sítá, touched with noble ire,
Open passage
Gave her fair body to the fire.
Open passage
Then straight the God of Wind appeared,
Open passage
And words from heaven her honour cleared.
Open passage
And Ráma clasped his wife again,
Open passage
Uninjured, pure from spot and stain,
Open passage
Obedient to the Lord of Fire
Open passage
And the high mandate of his sire.
Open passage
Led by the Lord who rules the sky,
Open passage
The Gods and heavenly saints drew nigh,
Open passage
And honoured him with worthy meed,
Open passage
Rejoicing in each glorious deed.
Open passage
His task achieved, his foe removed,
Open passage
He triumphed, by the Gods approved.
Open passage
By grace of Heaven he raised to life
Open passage
The chieftains slain in mortal strife;
