Open passage
While Khara, urged by valiant rage,
Open passage
Drew near that little hermitage,
Open passage
Those wondrous signs in earth and sky
Open passage
Smote on each prince's watchful eye.
Open passage
When Ráma saw those signs of woe
Open passage
Fraught with destruction to the foe,
Open passage
With bold impatience scarce repressed
Open passage
His brother chief he thus addressed:
Open passage
“These fearful signs, my brother bold,
Open passage
Which threaten all our foes, behold:
Open passage
All laden, as they strike the view,
Open passage
With ruin to the fiendish crew.
Open passage
The angry clouds are gathering fast,
Open passage
Their skirts with dusty gloom o'ercast,
Open passage
And harsh with loud-voiced thunder, rain
Open passage
Thick drops of blood upon the plain.
Open passage
See, burning for the coming fight,
Open passage
My shafts with wreaths of smoke are white,
Open passage
And my great bow embossed with gold
Open passage
Throbs eager for the master's hold.
Open passage
Each bird that through the forest flies
Open passage
Sends out its melancholy cries.
Open passage
All signs foretell the dangerous strife,
Open passage
The jeopardy of limb and life.
Open passage
Each sight, each sound gives warning clear
Open passage
That foemen meet and death is near.
Open passage
But courage, valiant brother! well
Open passage
The throbbings of mine arm foretell
Open passage
That ruin waits the hostile powers,
Open passage
And triumph in the fight is ours.
Open passage
I hail the welcome omen: thou
Open passage
Art bright of face and clear of brow.
Open passage
For Lakshmaṇ, when the eye can trace
Open passage
A cloud upon the warrior's face
Open passage
Stealing the cheerful light away,
Open passage
His life is doomed in battle fray.
Open passage
List, brother, to that awful cry:
Open passage
With shout and roar the fiends draw nigh.
Open passage
With thundering beat of many a drum
Open passage
The savage-hearted giants come.
